Hi! I’m Lauren Goetz, and I am the face behind Treetop Teaching. I have been a 5th grade classroom teacher for 8 years and have developed a real passion for creating resources that promote true student mastery of tricky grammar and writing concepts all while having a little fun!
I can remember being completely overwhelmed by helping my students master grammar concepts. There just seemed to be so many things my students needed to master in order to write well- capitalization, punctuation, commas, homophones, spelling, parts of speech, and so on. I was paralyzed by the task in front of me and ended up just printing off random practice worksheets and calling it a day. As you can imagine, this wasn’t helpful to my students. There wasn’t any consistency or scaffolded learning where one skill builds on another. I just squeezed in little bits of review where I could and told myself it just wasn’t that important.
After using a ton of red pens editing my students’ writing for spelling and grammar without any real change in their ability, I knew something had to change. I set out to create grammar lessons that would be quick (just 10 min a day), interactive and fun for my students, and – most importantly – lead to true mastery of these concepts so that it spilled over into their writing. I created systems for review that integrated into all subject areas and ended up creating students who read observantly (looking for these grammar skills in the writing of published authors) and wrote confidently.
Our classroom schedules are full of so many “non-negotiables”, and there are countless voices telling us how to spend those “free” moments.
College instructors showed us Pinterest-perfect lesson plans for grammar that we just don’t have time for.
We don’t have unlimited prep time to search and prepare for all the grammar lessons we would need.
